Atari 2600 ROM Collection on the Internet Archive
The Atari 2600, released in 1977, was the console that proved home video games were not a fad. With a 1.19 MHz processor, 128 bytes of RAM, and cartridge-based games, it brought arcade-style gaming into living rooms and created the template for the console industry.
The Internet Archive's Atari 2600 collection lets you play hundreds of games through in-browser emulation. The minimalist graphics — often just a few colored blocks and lines — required players to use imagination, and the best games achieved remarkable depth from extremely limited resources.
The 2600's library includes the founding texts of game design: Adventure (the first action-adventure game), Pitfall! (the first platformer), and Combat (competitive multiplayer). Studying these games reveals the core mechanics that modern titles still build upon.
