How to Download Internet Archive Books

May 9, 2026

Books on the Internet Archive fall into three buckets, and the download path depends on which bucket a given title sits in.

Public domain and openly licensed books

These download directly. On the item page, the right-hand panel lists every format: PDF, EPUB, full text, DjVu, sometimes Kindle. Click the format you want.

PDF holds the scanned page images and tends to be large. EPUB is reflowable text — far smaller, better for e-readers, but generated from OCR so quality depends on the scan. Full text is a plain .txt extracted by OCR — useful, but rough on older typography. DjVu is a compressed scanned-page format with a separate text layer. The text quality usually beats the auto-generated EPUB.

Books in the lending library

Most modern in-copyright titles. These cannot be downloaded as files. They open in the BookReader, an in-browser viewer that streams pages with DRM. You can borrow them with a free account, but the file stays on the Archive's side.

Tools that claim to bypass this are violating the lending terms. The lending program itself is in flux after the 2023 Hachette v. Internet Archive ruling, so availability shifts — many titles that were lendable a few years ago no longer are.

Preview and snippet items

Books listed as "preview only" or "snippet" only show selected pages. There is no full-file download by design.

Cleanup tips for old scans

If you want a clean, text-readable copy of a public-domain book and the auto-generated EPUB looks rough, grab the DjVu file or the full-text .txt and run it through a cleanup pass yourself. The OCR is not perfect — especially for pre-1900 typography — but it is a faster starting point than retyping.

For batch downloads, use the ia CLI with a format filter: ia download IDENTIFIER --format="PDF" pulls only the PDF version.

If you are searching for specific books across the Archive's enormous catalog, Arkibber makes it easier to filter by media type and narrow results before you start downloading — especially useful when a keyword search returns hundreds of items across texts, audio, and software.
